Nature

European shag

Alonnisos: The Cormorant
The European shag (Gulosus aristotelis, until recently Phalacrocorax aristotelis) is a medium-sized cormorant, with a long and thin beak and a long tail. It is quite similar to the Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) but is smaller and has many small differences, which are not visible from a distance. It is more tolerant of human presence than the Cormorant, and is often seen standing on some remote edge of the piers.

In the breeding season, males have a distinctive plume. Its plumage is not as black as the Cormorant's, and in many places has a coppery, metallic hue.

It feeds on fish, which it catches after majestic dives (up to 45 m) and skilful long dives. It flies very close to the surface of the water.

Culture

Mega Nero spring

Αλόννησος: Η πηγή Μέγα Νερό
The springs of Alonissos are located around the peaks of the impenetrable rocks of the Vouno area.

One of the greatest springs is the Mega Nero ("Great Water") fountain. There used always to be a fontain in this spring, the current construction however is newer. The spring no longer provides enough water.
