Main road-Leftos Gialos
Alonnisos / To the coast
Main road-Leftos Gialos

The trails connecting the main asphalt road with the beaches - here the Main road-Leftos Gialos route - crosses a green valley with running and spring water. The trail is short but very pleasant and can be combined with its neighbors, making use of the network of paths and dirt roads around Isomata.
The route starts from the asphalt road and goes down along the line of the gully. At the beginning, we walk in a landscape with tall riparian vegetation, maintained by the small springs of the ravine.
A bit lower, we enter olive groves that are occasionally cultivated. In their present state, these old olive groves participate in a semi-natural landscape of rich herbaceous vegetation and small rocks, where many interesting plants thrive.
Eventualy, join the coastal asphalt road and follow it to the beach of Left Gialos.

Orchids of Alonnisos
Orchis italica

Its inflorescence bears many flowers that resemble a man with a tail or a supernatural phallus (in ancient times the plant was called "Satyrion" because of the resemblance to the Satyrs, the perpetually erect attendants of Dionysus). The color of the flowers varies from bright pink to almost white.
In Alonissos, we shall find isolated plants in a variety of habitas: in the bright pine forest, the old terraces of the olive grove and the small meadows of the valleys.
