Mt. Hymettus: Kareas monastery walking loop

Mt. Hymettus: Kareas monastery

Kareas monastery walking loop

A short route, that many visitors, groups of people or families, follow it without planning, either the whole route or at least a part of it, every weekend as a pleasant respite from the stress of the city.

Starting from the parking area below the Agios Ioannis Karea monastery, catch the obvious dirt road (closed for vehicles) and follow it for 280 meters. Here a wide, almost like a small road, path begins, heading to the forest, soon reaching the recently burned slopes: cross the bare landscape on the very good path and gaze at panoramic views of Athens, the Saronic Gulf and Mt. Hymettus above us. It leads to a new dirt road, right across the rock of Bibesi Cave, which it is better to avoid (the access to the cave is relatively difficult and requires experience and good shoes). Follow the dirt road to the north for just 300 meters and descend to the starting point on a very clear path that swiftly enters the pine forest of Karea monastery.
