Oeta: HAC refuge-Pirgos peak
Oeta: Around HAC refuge
HAC refuge-Pirgos peak
The route from the Oeta refuge (Trapeza location) to the Pyrghos summit includes a nice crossing of the entire plateau surrounded by the high peaks of Oeta and offers the opportunity to see innumerable interesting elements of the landscape, flora and fauna of the mountain.
We start from the refuge, following the dirt road, which soon passes through a rocky bottleneck and enters Livadhies. We run the plateau, passing next to the small alpine lake and the adjacent fountain. We turn right onto a rugged dirt road that ascends smoothly to the Alykena peak. We meet the branch that goes down to the Vrisi (Fountain) of Kalogheros and continue up to the col between Pyrghos and Alykena. Here, we leave the road to get into a faint alley that soon becomes a path.
The path to Pyrghos is on a smooth and easy field, but as the presence of herds in the alpine zone is greatly reduced, the trace on the ground is no longer clear and trodden. A series of orange marks help us to keep track. We slightly descend towards a col, at the base of the final pyramid of the summit, and then ascend on a relatively steep and rocky field up to the highest point.
Throughout the course we find rare and interesting flora species. At the alpine lake in Livadhies, we will observe the alpine newts, while at the dusk we can hear the hoarse bark of the roe deer through the valleys and the ravines.
The whole route has spectacular view towards Livadhies and Greveno, while the highest point reveals the two elder brothers of Oeta, Giona and Vardhousia.
