Minerals and Rocks

In Greece, complex geological processes and intense volcanic activity have been carried out for millions of years. The result of this development is the presence of a variety of geological rocks and formations. Crystalline rocks such as marbles, gneisses, amphibolites, phyllites and greenschists, limestones, sandstones alternating with clay schists - the so called flysch, igneous rocks - plutonic and volcanic - but also Neogene and Quaternary, of river, lacustrine and marine origin occupy different regions of Greece of various extents.

Due to their characteristic features, they make a decisive contribution to the shaping of the landscape and of the water bodies in each region.

Often, in these formations, under special conditions, significant minerals, ores, and precious stones, are formed that can be exploited.
