The course of Menalon Trail follows a series of particular morphological features of the mountain landscape: ravines, steep valleys, etc. This is not accidental: the old mountain roads were carved in troubled times and their routes had to be short and well hidden.

It is also no coincidence that on these same morphological elements came and nested the monasteries, which were also built in times of instability and fear, thus searching for places that would at the same time be hidden and naturally fortified.
Thanks to this configuration, the Menalon Trail route passes through almost all the monasteries in the area: through the Prodromos and Philosophos monasteries - Old and New - in Dimitsana, by the deserted monastery of Agii Apostoli in Zygovisti and the late-byzantine monastery of Zoodochos Pigi in Stemnitsa. The trail passes by the monastery of Agii Theodori in Elati, through the monastery of Panagia Kernitsa in Nymfasia and by the old hermitage of Sfyrida.
