Karst formations on Menalon Trail
Karst formations on Menalon Trail

The cave of Lygos
With the exception of small caves on the Loussios ravine, few other noteworthy karst formations are known in the area along the Menalon Trail. One of them is a rock roof called the Lygos Cave: some remains of dry stone walls seem to confirm the use of the cave as a hideout of a bandit named Lygos.

The cave hosting the chapel of Sfyrida
Another small cave, between Nymfasia and Magouliana, houses the cave church of Panagia Sfyrida, an old hermitage in the area of Kernitsa monastery.

The large doline of Koskitsa
The monotonous landscape of indistinguishable limestone slopes with its dense or sparse fir forest is interrupted by several large hollow glades, called swallow holes whose size and dispersion is characteristic of mount Menalon.
Main elements of the vegetation across the numerous dolines and other level meadows of medium elevation are the wild Prunus and Pyrus species (like the Almond-leaved pear, Pyrus amygdaliformis) and the hawthorns Crataegus pycnoloba and Crataegus monogyna.

Crataegus pycnoloba, typical shrub of the dolines, is a Greek endemic species of hawthorn
