Aemyalon monastery

The monastery of Panagia Aemyalon has been founded in 1608, by Grigorios Kontogiannis and his sister, who moved from Aemyaloi of Messinia, where the monastery got its name. The painting was done by painters Dimitrios and Georgios Moshos of Nafplio.

Thanks to the easy access and the impressive natural environment, the Aemyalon monastery is today one of the popular attractions in the zone between Dimitsana and Stemnitsa.

The katholikon is dedicated to Virgin Mary and adorned with carved wooden iconostasis and frescoes of 1608, kept in good condition.

Originally, the monastery was built in the hollow of a rockshelter. Gradually, newer buildings were added.

In the late 19th c. the monastery went into decline and eventually merged with the monastery Prodromou, a dependency of which remains to this day. The place was either a monastery (men community) or a nunnery. Since 1995 revives as a male monastery and celebrates on September 8.
