Mt. Hymettus: Trail 10

Mt. Hymettus: Long trails and crossings

Trail 10

Long crossing of Mt. Hymettus starting from the monastery of Agios Ioanis Kinighos (Agia Paraskevi) and ends at Terpsithea. The Route 10 follows obvious and well marked trails (mostly with Red Dots and a circlular red mark with a yellow dot and scarcely a red number "10") and avoid as far as possible roads. To achieve this, however, is forced to lose elevation from the western edge of the peak, come down to Kesariani Monastery and drift once again at the end of the asphalt top.

The route passes close by the Cave of the Bat, crosses the peak Korakovouni and reaches the a small resting place, just after the old Telecom Tower. From here, it straddles the ridge until the asphalt. Th Trail 10 goes down to the Kesariani monastery (almost) and reaches again the summt asphalt through a very clean path that serves the fire watch tower.

Follow the dirt road for approximately 2 km. Ending with the dirt road, catch a downhill trail (for 1200m) which brings us to another dirt road that crosses the Sesi plateau, the great basin of the Central Hymettus. We will do more than 2 km on the gravel road that will bring us to the Stavros Pass, the large saddle which marks the end of the Northern Mt. Hymettus. A stop is imposed here, before entering the Southern Mt. Hymettus slopes.

A very good and pleasant path traverses under a group of three caves (Strogili Cave, Tripia Spilia Cave and Mavrovouni Cave) and begins the descent towards Terpsithea, catching a very long ridge with a nice view. We arrive a the edge of the settlement and go to the square where the bus terminus and some amenities.
