Geoparks

Geopark is a UNESCO-designated unified area, with a geological heritage of international significance, containing one or more sites of particular geological importance, scarcity or beauty, intended to conserve the geological heritage and promote public awareness of it, typically through "green tourism". Tourism industry promotion in geoparks, as a geographically sustainable and applicable tourism model, aims to sustain, and even enhance, the geographical character of a place.

In Greece, five areas are identified as Geoparks in order to highlight the outstanding geological and geomorphological sites, the educational programs and projects, and the promotion of geotourism of these regions.

Greek Geoparks belong to the European and the Global Geoparks Network coordinated and supported by the Greek Geoparks Forum.
