Birds of Zakynthos

The avifauna of Zakynthos is fairly rich. On the western and northern side of the island several passerines of Mediterranean scrub, such as the Sardinina Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala), the Subalpine Warbler (Sylvia cantillans), the Cretzschmar's bunting (Emberiza caesia), the Common Whitethroat (Sylvia communis), while the extensive rock complexes and coastal cliffs are ideal for Eleonora’s Falcons (Falco eleonorae) and passerines, such as the Black-eared Wheatear (Oenenathe hispanica), the Rock Nuthatch (Sitta neumayer), the Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius).

The agricultural land on the plain part of the island host – among others – Olive-tree Warblers (Hippolais olivetorum) and Black-headed Buntings (Emberiza melanocephala), but also nocturnal birds of prey such as the Little Owl (Athene noctua), the Barn Owl (Tyto alba), the Scops Owl (Otus scops).

Ιn the marine zone around the island we can also observe Shags (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) and Scopoli's Shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea).

The two large wetlands (Alykes Katastariou salt pans, Keri Lake) receive several waterfowls and waders, in winter but mainly during migration.
