Mt. Hymettus: Sfittos way-Roman quarry

Mt. Hymettus: Koropi

Sfittos way-Roman quarry

A relatively large and somewhat complicated loop trail that guides us to some of the most remote yet interesting areas of the Mt. Hymettus.

The trail starts from any point near the end of Sfittos Way (go there from Koropi), on the higher part of the of Douka ravine. On the first part, we follow the very good and well marked (with Red Dots) ancient path of Sfittia Way, which brings us to the saddle of Stavros Pass. From Stavros, by a combination of path and dirt roads, we reach the southern edge of the Sesi plateau, where we turn right and head uphill on a unclear but densely way-marked path that meanders along the stony slopes and leads to the roman quarry with two unfinished -and abandoned- columns.

The landscape on this edge of Mt. Hymettus is evocatively desolate and wild. We ascend along rocky yet gently slopes on a well-marked path until we get down to a clearer path coming straight from the Sesi plateau and which will go down in the friendly plateau of Profitis Ilias, where the remnants of the altar of Omvrios Zeus and Proopsios Apollo and the chapel of Prophet Elias with its fresh water well.

We will go back to our starting point from a wide downhill path to the roads of the valley.
