Mt. Hymettus: The Sfittos ancient way to Zeus altar

Mt. Hymettus: Koropi

The Sfittos ancient way to Zeus altar

The route starts just after the monastery of Bethlehem (above Koropi) and the hill of the mycenaean acropolis of Sfittos and enters the ravine of Douka. The road ends at a level area beneath the rocks of Mavrovouni and the cone of the peak of Profitis Ilias.

The trail, maintained and densely marked with Red Dots is meandering into the pine stands. After passing next to the historic well of Doukas, reaches the Stavros Pass, a nice resting point.

From the saddle, the ancient way continued in the gully towards Terpsithea. Our trail will turn right and ascend smoothly to the nice plateau of Profitis Ilias. Reaching the plateau, we will find in our left the area where there was the altar of Zeus Omvrios and Apollo Proopsios (you can see just the foundations and a few relics). In the perimeter of the plateau there are a few houses and to the side towards Koropi (east) is built the complex of the Prophet Elias chapel with outbuildings and its well. The place is very pleasant, with a nice view, perfectly enticing for a respite before returning from the very good path to our starting point.
