HYM47 A MTB loop route around Kalopoula spring
A "classic" circular route on Mt. Hymettus, neither boring nor difficult, along a nice and wooded landscape, finishing on a technical but passable path.
The route starts from the guardhouse at the entrance to Kesariani Monastery area and just before the monastery, we leave the asphalt road to enter to the right into a dirt road closed by a barrier. The first part is quit passable, yet often damaged by the rains. After an intense uphill, we meet the road that comes from Koutalas and we continue on gentle slopes to the highest point of the route, where there is a stone bench with nice view to the Athenian basin and the Saronic Gulf. A slightly downhill brings us to the end of the dirt road above the Kalopoula recreation area. We descend the asphalt road to Kesiariani monastery and take the one-way road to the starting point. In the first sharp (left) turn we find on our right hand a dirt road closed with barrier. If we want to have fun (and depending on our cycling skills), we can take the MTB downhill path that starts immediately left after the barrier and circumventing various jumps sideways, we arrive exactly at the starting point, 100 meters above the guardhouse. Alternatively, we can take the main trail or continue the descent on the asphalt and come directly to the starting point.
