A strenuous MTB route on Mt. Hymettus
A nice MTB route, for riders familiar with unpaved roads and paths.
The route starts from the guardhouse at the entrance of Kesariani and follows the asphalt almost near to the top of Mt. Hymettus- this section, which is considered as an entire route for many riders, should be seen as a warm up in our case. Just before the junction that leads to the top, get a dirt road that zig-zags on the steep slope and ends above the zone of the ancient quarries. Opened on a rocky terrain, the road requires a constant attention, so to enjoy the Saronic Gulf and the coastal area of the eastern basin we need to take a rest.
Just above the fire lookout tower, we quit the dirt road and take a short trail (260 m). The terrain is not easy, so either we trust our skills or we carry the bike. After the fire lookout tower, a nice downhill on an easier dirt road will bring us to the hill of the Archangels; then we descend - fully satisfied - to our starting point.
