Mt. Hymettus: Profitis Ilias-Michailidis Memorial
Mt. Hymettus: Ilioupoli
Profitis Ilias-Michailidis Memorial
The route begins from the Prophet Elias chapel of Ilioupolis, follows a faint yet scenic path waymarked with Yellow Dots (known as the Yellow Trail of Mt. Hymettus), up to the memorial of the famous Greek mountaineer G. Michailidis and returns to the starting point following a clear path marked with Red Dots (the Red Trail of Mt. Hymettus). The first (and last) part of the trail have not marked, but the walkway is wide and clear.
Starting from the Prophet Elias chapel, the trail reaches the first gravel road, a junction where there is a water tank. The area burned in the past decade and the young pine trees just acquired a significant status among ignitable brushwood. No waymarking up to here and the next hundred meters (the first Yellow Dots are just after the ancient quarry, known as Gouva of Hymettus). The route crosses a dirt road again and becomes barely visible. We follow its track on a rocky hillside, by the help of old, faded Yellow Dots, some cairns and in some places rows of stones indicating the way. After the junction with the Red Trail (what we will take for the descent) the path becomes more obvious and leads to a crossroad of four paths, where the lonely spirit of G. Michailidis haunts the spartan monument the Greek mountaineers dedicated to his memory.
The descent is a clearer path, somewhat steep but well marked with Red Dots, that brings us to the same dirt roads intersected earlier and through which we will return to our starting point.
